Short Instructions:

  • Separate induction, birth, cesarean planning, and newborn cards.

  • Start with induction cards so she can talk to her provider beforehand about options. There is no need to put them in the birth plan. (Lay cards on table with her preferences showing).

  • Do the same for newborn preferences and cesarean planning cards.

  • Finally, build a birth plan with remaining cards and lay them out as if she could have everything in a perfect ‘dream birth’.

  • Prioritize: Have client choose the top six things that are priority wishes. Next, let them choose 4 more second priority birth wishes. (If something is standard with her hospital or provider, there is no need to keep them as priorities). You can choose to let them have more or less priority cards.

  • Take pictures or write out top 10 birth wishes, along with newborn preferences.

Make sure her desires make sense and don’t contradict each other (for example, having an epidural with intermittent monitoring at the same time would be a contradiction).

You may also combine two cards as ‘one choice’. (i.e -Laboring in the tub and waterbirth, or freedom to move around, and pushing in any position).

Cesarean planning can be discussed prior to birth, or added on to the birth plan.

A fun alternative:

Have the partner lay out their perfect birth plan FIRST. This can sometimes be funny, but also creates dialogue between them and the birthing person.
